UK Grad Seeks to Turn the ‘New Normal’ Into ‘Brighter Successes’

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 27, 2020) — The COVID-19 pandemic has turned life upside down for almost everyone, and University of Kentucky students had to quickly adapt to finish out a semester that was unlike any other in UK history. Maria Sanchez, who graduated from UK this May, was no stranger to these challenges. Sanchez chose to share her personal story of family, hard work and resiliency, and how she plans to use her skills and experiences to create a better tomorrow. From Mexico to the U.S.

Rachel Farr

Dr. Rachel Farr is an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Farr's research interests include child development, family functioning, LGBTQ+ parent families, adoption and birth family experiences, mixed methods, and intersectionality of identities.

Dhananjay Ravat

Dr. Dhananjay Ravat is a Professor of Geophysics in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Ravat's research interests include geophysics and planetary sciences. He has conducted research on topics pertaining to exploration of the earth and planets with gravity and magnetic fields, solid-earth geophysics, tectonics, and environmental geophysics. Dr. Ravat has also participated in the development of World Digital Magnetic Anomaly Maps and the standards for the North American Gravity anomaly database.

50 UK Students Chosen to Present at National Conference Now Canceled Due to COVID-19

Before the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, 50 outstanding University of Kentucky undergraduate research students learned they were selected to present their faculty-mentored research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). NCUR has since been canceled, but UK's Office of Undergraduate Research is still celebrating the achievement.

Matthew Springer

Dr. Matthew Springer is an Assistant Extension Professor of Wildlife Management in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources. Dr. Springer's research interests include wildlife damage management, human wildlife interactions, wildlife ecology, habitat use and management, and conservation biology. 

UK’s Substance Use Research Day Highlights Work of UK Faculty and Students

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 5, 2020) – Growing up in an area heavily impacted by the opioid epidemic, University of Kentucky grad student Samantha Malone knew she wanted to pursue a career that involved research on substance use.

Undergraduate Researchers to Present Their Work at the State Capitol

Twenty University of Kentucky students will make their way to the State Capitol Building in Frankfort, Kentucky, March 5 to present their research at the 2020 Posters-at-the-Capitol event.  This one-day annual event is held to show Kentucky legislators the importance of undergraduate research and scholarly work in Kentucky. The governor proclaims this day to be Undergraduate Research Day across the Commonwealth. 

New Study Examines Ways to Improve Cancer Literacy in Kentucky Students

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 10, 2020) – A new study led by University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center researchers suggests that implementing cancer education curricula in middle and high schools may improve cancer literacy in Kentuckians and ultimately help reduce cancer rates.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 7, 2020) — Conducting research during the summer can be a transformative experience for undergraduate students, as they put their skills to the test in labs, fields, library collections, art studios and the stage. In an effort to engage students in investigative and creative activities and to invest in undergraduate research, the Office of Undergraduate Research provides students with Summer Research Grants, awarded to undergraduates in all areas of intellectual inquiry and many different levels of matriculation.
