I enjoy research because.... "it is always an opportunity to ask questions, seek answers to them, and then find both answers and new, exciting questions coming back to you!"

How did you first get interested in undergraduate research at UK?

"I first became interested in research when I began the Appalachian Studies program and found myself asking questions in an area I loved. I assembled some prospective plans and a title, contacted a few great academics, and applied for the undergraduate research showcase. That chance to talk with people about my thoughts and hear them interested in my idea was a source of motivation to continue!"

How long have you been engaged in undergraduate research?

"I have been engaged in research since my freshman year, and I have been working on this current project with Carol Street across this academic year!"

What has been the most exciting aspect of your research so far?

"I had no idea that this experience would lead me to several programs and conferences. From research, I was accepted to present at the Kentucky Gender and Women's Studies, Appalachian Studies Association, and American Sociological Association conferences. I also received grant funding through the Eller & Billings research award, research support through the Chellgren Fellowship, and funding and the chance to refine my work as a 3rd-place finalist in the 5-Minute Fast Track last year. These opportunities gave me the most exciting time to grow and be ever-inquisitive!"

What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research?

"Go for it- no matter what stage you are at in planning or what field you are studying! Research is valid in every field, and you can safely research things alone, with others, with mentors, with a heavily-funded organizational project, and more! If you have an observation that interests you, seek the truth surrounding it, be careful and courteous with others around you, and submit your work to any place you feel is useful."
