LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 9, 2023) — The University of Kentucky Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) will host the fourth annual Research + Creative Experience Expo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Jan. 16, 2024, at the Gatton Student Center Social Staircase. The event introduces undergraduates to the diversity of research at UK, allowing students to network with research faculty and staff, and learn about mentored research opportunities.

“The expo is the perfect opportunity to explore the plethora of research opportunities at UK,” said Shria Holla, a Lewis Honors College member and mathematical economics major in the College of Arts and Science, Gaines Fellow and current research ambassador.

“It can be easy to overlook an interesting topic because there are so many disciplines here to choose from,” Holla said. “However, the research expo helps students realize that there really is research for everyone. The biggest obstacle is finding those opportunities, but the research expo brings it right to students’ doorstep.”

With more than 35 programs participating, the Research + Creative Experience Expo will offer a variety of resources and information while bringing research mentors and programs seeking applicants together with interested students to learn about available opportunities.

“The expo is a great place for students to speak with experts in a variety of disciplines and learn about all the incredible research opportunities available on campus,” said Emily Sallee, the assistant director of the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards. “Research is such an impactful way for students to continue to apply the knowledge and skills they are learning inside the classroom, and the expo enables students to speak directly to potential mentors and find an opportunity that fits with their future education and career goals."

Sallee has hosted a table at each Research + Creative Experience Expo since the event's inception.

Students from all majors, backgrounds and skill levels are encouraged to attend and talk with faculty, graduate students and undergraduate research ambassadors to learn about available research and creative work experiences.

Students are encouraged to review the list of colleges, departments and research centers attending the Research + Creative Experience Expo online here.

Students seeking assistance with navigating the summer fellowship application process, such as completing a personal statement and writing an abstract or proposal, can visit the Events page on the OUR website.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
