Preet Patel

Senior, Biology & Neuroscience major and a 2024 CURE Fellow

Research Mentor: Hisashi Sawada

Supported by the Cardiovascular Health Research Priority Area

How will this summer research fellowship support your research efforts?

“This summer research fellowship will allow me to gain a deeper understanding of aortic physiology, aortic biomechanics, and the pathophysiology of aortic dissections. Also, the hands-on experience with specialized software technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration with experts in the field will be invaluable in enhancing my overall research experience.”

Why is research important?

“Research is important because it fuels progress by pushing the boundaries of knowledge and technology. Without research, there would not be enough understanding about topics in order to innovate. For example, insights from my research project may lead to innovative approaches in tissue engineering and the development of new biomaterials, enhancing strategies for vascular repair and regeneration. This would only be possible after fully understanding the biomechanics of the aorta, especially in the disease state.”

What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research?

“I would tell them to get started as early as possible, so they can be exposed to all the different opportunities such as fellowships, conferences, showcases, internships, etc. Also, I would tell them that it is not as intimidating as it may seem. Mentors are passionate about their work, and research can be intense sometimes, but everyone is very helpful, and some of the best memories can be made in lab!”
