Gabija Ziemyte

Senior, Physics and Math major, English minor

Research Mentor: Dr. Christopher Crawford

I enjoy research because.... "it gives me an in-depth understanding of the physics that I'm most fascinated by. I get to see all the things I've learned about through classes and reading random articles in practice, and I get to see the consequences of these big new ideas in physics that have just recently started to be understood."

How did you first get interested in undergraduate research at UK?

"I came to UK because I knew it had a lot of research opportunities and that was something I wanted to prioritize, since I was planning on graduate school after undergrad."

How long have you been engaged in undergraduate research?

"I started research the fall of my sophomore year."

What has been the most exciting aspect of your research so far?

"Getting to make things (like wires or electromagnetic coils) that will be used in experiments that people across the world are all collaborating on. It's fun to see the a tangible product of the work that I've put in."

What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research?

"Research has been one of the best things I decided to do in college. I've met so many people, had a lot of opportunities open up, and learned a bunch of cool new things because of it. Plus, it's helped narrow my interests to something I can see myself doing for the rest of my career. So give research a chance! There are tons of research projects out there, so you're bound to find a fit."
