Project Title: "Historical Changes in Campus Sustainability: A Tree Canopy and Land Use Study"

How will this summer research fellowship support your research efforts?

“This summer research fellowship will significantly support my research efforts by providing the time, structure, and resources necessary to carry out an independent, in depth study in environmental sustainability. While I’ve engaged in research through my coursework, this fellowship offers the opportunity to pursue a self-directed project that will sharpen my skills in archival research, data visualization, and policy analysis. It will also enhance my ability to organize complex environmental data into actionable insights, skills that are vital for both graduate studies and a career in sustainability.”

Why is sustainability research important?

“Sustainability research is important because it helps us understand the complex environmental challenges we face today and guides us in creating cleaner, healthier, and safer environments for everyone. It enables us to learn, adapt, and develop innovative strategies that move us toward a more sustainable and equitable future. I believe we have a responsibility to care for the land in ways that do not degrade it, and sustainability research plays a critical role in advancing that goal. This type of research supports efforts to improve human well-being, promote sustainable development, and reduce the harmful practices contributing to global issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution."

What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research?

“Conducting research, whether on your own, with a professor, or through a department, is completely possible for any UK student! One doesn't need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to conducting research. Initially, I recommend reaching out to research ambassadors, professors, and advisors since they know the UK research landscape and can help point you in the right direction. The experience and skills you acquire through research will contribute to your personal development and distinguish you from interested employers and graduate programs.”
