I enjoy research because..."It helps save lives"
How long have you been engaged in undergraduate research? "2 years"
What has been the most exciting aspect of your research so far? "I very much appreciate the mechanistic aspect of my Lipid Droplet Atlas project. Instead of just looking at macroscopic details, my team is undertaking a massive survey of different mice brains to understand the where/why/what/how of Alzheimer's. Long-term, I'm hopeful that our work could in some way contribute to better treatments for Alzheimer's Disease."
How has undergraduate research impacted your college experience at the University of Kentucky? “One way is how it's shaped my ability to dig into primary literature. This is a really important skill that, despite not being explicitly taught, is vital as the sources used in class shift from regular undergrad worksheets to sophisticated, technical reports/papers. Professors expect you to understand how to break down a piece that uses vocabulary you're not familiar with and extract helpful guidelines for other work or activities.”
Has research changed your career or educational goals? Please explain. “Absolutely, as an aspiring doctor, I plan to incorporate research into my work both by using my cases to contribute to a research institution like UK and by implementing new strategies that research has developed.”
What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research? “When choosing a lab, just like you need to pick a subject you're interested in, it's also really important to consider the people you want to work with. That also really shapes how much you'll enjoy working in the lab and how much you'll be able to accomplish.”
