Research Mentor: Chris Richards

I enjoy research because…“I found a passion, a community, and a desire to keep learning more."

How long have you been engaged in undergraduate research? "1.5 years"

What has been the most exciting aspect of your research so far? "The most exciting aspect of research is the little wins. You work so hard and fail so many times that when you truly are the first one to discover new information, it is the most exciting experience. These little wins are what push you through the fails."

How has undergraduate research impacted your college experience at the University of Kentucky? “Undergraduate research at the University of Kentucky has given me a community within my major of like-minded individuals. I have found the most amazing people that inspire me, push me towards my goals, and support me along the way.”

Has research changed your career or educational goals? Please explain. “Before undergraduate research, I did not know what I wanted for my career, and now I am applying to PhD programs to make research my future.”

What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research? “Put yourself out there, and you might unexpectedly find something you love.”
