Dr. Analia Loria is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences in the College of Medicine. She is a highly trained cardiovascular scientist with a strong background in cardiovascular physiology, biochemistry and vascular biology of vasoactive peptides, with particular expertise in the effects of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) on the cardiovascular system and is also affiliated with the Saha Cardiovascular Research Center.

In the past year Dr. Loria has mentored 6 undergraduate students.  She explains that as a mentor she enjoys "getting to know the best personalized approach to develop and guide the critical thinking of each student. It is a very nice feeling when you see them start making their own choices and take ownership of a given project."  One of Dr. Loria's mentees noted, "When I think of the qualities of a good mentor, Dr. Loria exceeds the expectations because of her commitment to providing me and other students with the most valuable experience as researchers and mentees. Dr. Loria is a great candidate for this recognition because not only does she push me to succeed in the lab, but she also encourages me to excel outside of the lab.”

As an undergraduate, Dr. Loria joined a research lab and this experience proved to be transformative, "This event shaped my career as a basic researcher." For students considering undergraduate research, Dr. Loria looks for compromise, a real interest in learning and challenging themselves, as well as the capacity to communicate and interact with a research team.

She offers these words of wisdom to students thinking about engaging in research: "I would recommend choosing a lab and reach out to the principal investigator to talk about research and mentorship. Also try to contact other students in the lab or request a visit to the lab to observe a normal day of work." Dr. Loria also believes it's very important for interested students to read 1-2 recent publications by the lab to get a better understanding of their research before interacting with the PI or other students

Thank you Dr. Analia Loria for your unwavering support of undergraduate research at the University of Kentucky. We are pleased to recognize your dedication this week as our Research Faculty Mentor of the Week.
