Project Allows UK Student to Positively Impact her Community

UK Students, Faculty Approach Summer Research Fellowships in Creative Ways to Continue Studies

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 24, 2020) — This year, 28 Summer Research Fellowships were awarded to undergraduate students by the University of Kentucky Office of Undergraduate Research. Excited to put their skills to the test in labs, fields, art studios and on stage, neither students nor faculty could have predicted the looming impacts of the novel coronavirus, introducing significant changes to nearly all facets of our daily lives. 

Lauren Hudson

Lauren is a junior Neuroscience and Biology major with a Spanish minor. She is working with her mentor Dr. Nathan Vanderford on her summer research project "Appalachian Kentucky Cancer Education Intervention"

Eliot Bradshaw

Eliot Bradshaw is a senior Political Science and Psychology double major with Criminology and Peace Studies minors. She is working with her mentor Dr. Jonathan Golding on her summer research project "The Influence of Alcohol and Rohypnol on Legal Decision-Making"

Humza Anwar

Humza Anwar is a sophomore Biology major. He is working with his mentor Dr. Craig Vander Kooi on his summer research project "The Structural and Catalytic Function of the Novel Carbohydrate Active Enzyme Phosphoglucan Water Dikinase"

Chelsea Bass

Chelsea Bass is a senior Psychology major and Neuroscience minor. She is working with her mentor Dr. Rachel Farr this summer on her research project "How do Family Conversations About Sex Relate to Feelings of Support and Future Parenthood Among LGBTQ+ People?"

Office of Undergraduate Research Accepting Applications for Summer Research Fellowships

Conducting research during the summer can be a transformative experience for undergraduate students, as they put their skills to the test in labs, fields, library collections, art studios and the stage. In an effort to engage students in investigative and creative activities and to invest in undergraduate research, the Office of Undergraduate Research provides students with Summer Research Grants.

Undergraduate Students: Take Advantage of Summer Research Opportunities

Without the added pressure of daily classes, summer research can be especially rewarding for University of Kentucky underclassmen. The goal of the summer research program is to engage students in investigative and creative activities and to invest in undergraduate research so that students may experience the epitome of engaged learning.
