LUCAS BERTUCCI

Junior, Chemical Engineering major with minors in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Photography

Research Mentor: Drs. Joshua Werner and Jack Groppo

I enjoy research because.... "No one knows all the right answers and that is okay! Being part of a research team means that we are in this journey together. When things do not go as we hope, we are going to struggle together. But when we figure it out, we are going to celebrate together!"

How did you first get interested in undergraduate research at UK?

"I got tired of solving textbook problems and wanted to tackle real world issues!"

How long have you been engaged in undergraduate research?

"I have been engaged in research since my freshman year."

What has been the most exciting aspect of your research so far?

"I have been given the opportunity to design cutting edge recycling systems. As I turn electronic waste into high purity copper, I feel that my work really has meaning."

What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research?

"For my fellow engineers, I recommend the Engineering Scholars in Undergraduate Research program. That is where I got my start and my foot in the door. From there, I found the research mentor that I have been with since I started college."
