ANICAH SMITH

Senior, Chemical Engineering major

Research Mentor: Dr. J. Zach Hilt

I enjoy research because.... "I am able to contribute to global scientific knowledge in a meaningful way. Research makes a difference!"

How did you first get interested in undergraduate research at UK?

"I participated in StemCats during my freshman year. We completed a semester-long research project and presented our work at the end of the year. This experience drove me to seek out other research opportunities."

How long have you been engaged in undergraduate research?

"I have been engaged in research for 4 years."

What has been the most exciting aspect of your research so far?

"I was able to participate in the 2021 Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF REU) here at UK. My faculty mentor, graduate mentor, and I worked together to develop a novel project that I worked on full-time! I presented that work in Boston, Massachusetts at the 2021 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) student conference. Discussing my project with other researchers from around the globe was an amazing experience that I will never forget. "

What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research?

"Research will transform your college experience. It is challenging, thought-provoking, and molds you into an independent thinker. Research will help you better understand your coursework and will help you develop critical thinking skills. Who knows, you might find your passion and decide to pursue a graduate degree!"
