16 Students Selected for Inaugural CURE Fellowship Program

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 23, 2022) — The Office of Undergraduate Research is honored to announce that 16 undergraduates have been selected for the 2022 Commonwealth Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) Fellowship program.

UK Junior to Participate in Research Internship Program in Germany

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 29, 2022) — University of Kentucky junior Gretchen Ruschman has been selected to participate in the Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) program through the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst – DAAD). Ruschman is an agricultural and medical biotechnology major in the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and a student in the UK Lewis Honors College.

Q. How will this summer research fellowship support your research efforts and future goals? A. "This fellowship has allowed me to conduct summer research for the first time in my undergraduate career. It also gives me the opportunity to begin a new research project that will expose me to new and familiar aspects of research." Q. Why is sustainability research important? A. "Sustainability research is important because it puts us on the path to a cleaner environment and one that will be able to sustain itself long-term."

UK Appalachian Center Honors 7 Students With Annual Research Awards

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 26, 2022) — The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center is honoring seven students with its annual research awards. Four graduate students received the James S. Brown Graduate Student Award for Research on Appalachia, and two graduate students and one undergraduate student received the center's Eller and Billings Student Research Award.

Q. How will this summer research fellowship support your research efforts and future goals? A. "I desire to work in the policy field in the future. To research something I am passionate about in water conservation is already a great opportunity, for it to also be applicable to both my political science and economics degrees is incredible. The experience I gain could be a wonderful first step for my future career." Q. Why is sustainability research important?

"I am currently unsure of my next steps after my undergraduate degree and have always been interested in research. As my project specifically, I am looking forward to collaborating with other organizations and working with local communities to get data." Q. Why is sustainability research important?

Q. How will this summer research fellowship support your research efforts and future goals? A. "The fellowship will support my time in the lab where I will run experiments. Overall, this experience is very valuable to me because power and energy is my passion, so getting research experience in this line of work prepares me for my career." Q.
