Junior, Agricultural and Medical Biotechnology major, Plant and Soil Sciences minor

Research Mentor: Dr. Klaas van Wijk

I enjoy research because.... "it gives me the opportunity to explore the unknown, as well as contribute to something much larger than myself. Undergraduate research allows me to uncover the molecular mechanisms that maintain plant health, which is crucial to the world's supply of food, fuel, and fiber."

How did you first get interested in undergraduate research at UK?

"Plants have always fascinated me. Through the Chellgren Fellowship Program, I discovered that I could pursue this interest by engaging in undergraduate research."

How long have you been engaged in undergraduate research?

"Since Fall 2021"

What has been the most exciting aspect of your research so far?

"As part of my research experience, I have had the opportunity to travel and connect with others who share a similar passion for plant science research. I was able to participate in an REU at Cornell University, and also present at the Southern Division Meeting of the American Phytopathological Society. These opportunities allowed me to interact with amazing scientists from across the country!"

What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research?

"The best way to find out if research interests you is to do it! Likewise, do not be afraid to seek out other research opportunities if a project or lab does not seem like the right fit for you."
