Erin Inouye

Junior, English and Art History major

Research Mentors: Carol Street and Dr. Miriam Kienle

I enjoy research because.... "I love the feeling of learning and discovering new things."

How did you first get interested in undergraduate research at UK?

"The Learning Lab internship was recommended to me by Professor Kienle in the Art History department. When I looked into the different collections available to work with it was almost like fate that the Ullin Leavell photographs were waiting for me. I am a Japanese American, and I have long wanted to do work that connects me to the place my ancestors came from, so getting to spend time researching post-war Japan has been very personal to me."

How long have you been engaged in undergraduate research?

"I began research through the Learning Lab in the Fall of 2021."

What has been the most exciting aspect of your research so far?

"I have gotten to meet lots of other students and faculty along the way which I have really enjoyed. The community aspect of doing research, even though all of our projects are different, has been incredibly comforting and fun. It's just great to bounce ideas off of one another, and gain insight from other perspectives. "

What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research?

"Do it! There is research to be done for any and all disciplines! Before I started doing this research I didn't really think there were any research opportunities out there for arts and humanities students, but that's not true! There is a great community of students and faculty to who want to help you succeed! And libraries are your best friend! Don't be afraid to ask for help or send emails asking for advice!"
