Research Mentor: Dr. Kathryn Saatman

I enjoy research because.... "it allows me to expand on the knowledge learned in the classroom and opens the door for so many unique opportunities, like national conferences and other amazing networking events!"

How did you first get interested in undergraduate research at UK?

"My advisor Mark Prendergast recommended getting involved in a lab my sophomore year."

How long have you been engaged in undergraduate research?

"1 year"

What has been the most exciting aspect of your research so far?

"Receiving the training to perform techniques I would have never imagined being able to do as an undergrad, such as confocal imaging, performing animal surgeries, and so much more!"

What advice would you give to other UK students thinking about doing research?

"I would highly recommend joining a lab as soon as possible (freshman or sophomore year) and continue to work in the lab the remaining of undergrad which will allow you to gain so many skills and become comfortable working independently in lab!"
